“Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, 3 I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.” Luke 1:1-4
Luke’s Gospel has its own unique qualities. It is the only Gospel that has a sequel – the book of Acts was most likely penned by the same author. We know that Luke was most likely writing to a primarily Gentile audience and to an audience that was under significant persecution and in need of hearing “good news” about Jesus Christ. The gospel writer used Mark’s Gospel as a source as well as at least one (and most likely two other sources). Luke was an historian and also used many references and illusions to Old Testament scripture to make the case that Jesus Christ was/is the long awaited for Messiah. The Gospel of Luke is the only one that goes into significant development of the birth narratives of Jesus Christ and even draws parallels and contrasts between the births and roles of John the Baptist and Jesus. Enjoy this gospel – it is a wonderful text.
