October 11, 2018 – Saint of the Day – Saint John XXIII: Appointed Pope just short of his 78th birthday, he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban Missile crisis. On his deathbed he said, “It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better.”

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” Luke 22:19-20

“If God has willed to communicate to us his ineffable light and share with us his life, God must himself determine the way in which this communication and sharing are to take place God begins by addressing to man his word. When [humanity] hears and receives the word of God, obeys his summons and responds to God’s call, then [humanity] is brought to the font of baptism, or to the cleansing rivers of penance. He is nourished with the blessed Eucharist in which the body of the Lord is given to us to be our true spiritual food, the pledge of our eternal salvation…Jesus wants us to “come to him” not only by faith, but also in sacramental union…” (Thomas Merton, “Grace and the Sacraments”, Life and Holiness, p. 61)

There are so many ways that G-d has elected to communicate G-d’s Grace to humanity:

We have the Word of G-d: words of Law and Grace in the testaments.

We have the Prophets: those who witnessed to the power of G-d.

We have the Traditions handed down to us through the Church Fathers and the Lutheran doctrine.

We have the Sacraments: Water and Bread and Wine

We have the Son Incarnate: Jesus, the true Son of G-d, the true human who saves all humanity.
