“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:1-2
It ends where it all began.
We will make our way through the shadows towards the shimmering river of life,
leading to the primordial garden,
where we will be healed by the leaves
and the sweet grainy fruit of the tree of life.
We will no longer turn our faces towards the wall in order to hide our shame.
Rather the Lamb will lead us to the New Jerusalem.
The gates will be open wide.
In thanksgiving we will enter. (Rick Fry, It Ends Where It All Began)
The gates will be wide open. The gates will have to be wide open for the inclusive nature of the kingdom of G-d. No more will distinctions be made as the world makes distinctions. The kingdom will not only be filled with beautiful people, the beautiful people of earthly standards – as the earth judges them to be beautiful. The kingdom of G-d will include people of every race, nation, tongue, and tribe. All people are beautiful to G-d. And in the kingdom there is no need to hide our faces in shame – the shame we have felt in this world, the shame of guilt, the shame of disfigurement, the shame of sin, the shame of considering ourselves “less than”. In the kingdom of G-d, the gates will be wide open, and G-d will welcome people – and in thanksgiving we will enter – and the surprise on our faces will be something to behold.
