“The apostles returned to Jesus, and they told him all that they had done and taught. And Jesus said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” Mark 6:30-31
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30
Jesus taught his disciples many, many things. But one of the most important, and the least talked about lesson he taught his disciples was rest and renewal. Jesus not only taught it, he modeled it – or as we might say he “talked the talk and walked the walk”. At one point in the scripture Jesus actually made the disciples get into a boat to get away from the crowds. There may be something to Jesus taking charge and putting us in a situation of rest.
Sometimes Jesus needs to “smack us in the head” to help us understand that we need to step back and take some rest. Sabbath time has been an important teaching in the bible since Old Testament times. And it wasn’t a suggestion – it was a command: “Remember the Sabbath”. The burdens of this life can be very heavy – very heavy. We contend with conflict, loss, trials and tribulations, as well as tremendous joys and happiness each and every day. Often the accumulation of all of our experiences can become a load to bear. Take time to rest – take time to get away – take time for reflection and prayer. If we are to allow Jesus to lead us in all aspects of our lives, then we need to take a lesson from him, and rest.
